I have a secret obsession..

for electric yellow cichlids. I have been in love with this fish and its colors now for a few years but my ph and hardness were I was living before was not good for them. Now were I live my ph from my tap is 7.6 and my hardness is 8 which I think will work for them. Am I right? If so I am going to try to convince my husband I need just one more tank there was actually a 55 gallon on craigslist for $50 with everything except the stand the other day I sent an email to see if they still have it. If my water will work I would like you guys to tell me which would be better either just a group of the electric yellows or could I mix them with others from reading the profiles the others I think would work due to water permiters are grants peacock cichlid, mason peacock cichlid, and red zebra cichlids. Which of these would be better and how many could I put in the tank and what mix as far as male female ratio should I do?

Kindest Regards,
Amanda

I think there are about 3 or more specific spieces of electric yellows, but they pretty much like the same water chemistry.

They preffer a pH of 7.8 to 8.2. That isn't a problem. You can probably go to one of your lfs and find a product that will boost your pH. My lfs has one.

As for the hardness. Isn't 8 pretty soft? Yellow electrics preffer hard water, I belive. There are probably several ways to boost hardness. Unfortunately, I don't know any right now. But you should be able to adjust it pretty easily. Who knows (Id don't lol).

Anyway, I hope this helps! Good luck on your secret obsession!

I have done more research and have found they still will not work with my water so if the tank is still for sell and I can convince my hubby I will still get it just not for cichlids. I don't add things to my tanks to change the ph or hardness I don't feel like its healthy for the fish.

Kindest Regards,
Amanda
