Hello, so since the last time i posted here I had a lot more platys then i do now, but one i got from the store must have had something wrong with it becuase that one and about four-five other platys died
HOWEVER thats not the point of this convo technechally. What i want to know is how many platys can be in a 39 gallon (tall) fish tank with a angelfish? (which i think may be full grown?)
Platys need more vertical space than horizontal (height) space. Angels, on the other hand, really need height. Many will exceed 6 inches in diameter and 8 inches in height, but I assume you already know that.
I wouldn't keep too many platys in there since they breed so often, but it wouldn't be a huge issue since the angels will snack on the fry as long as they are there. Personally I wouldn't really keep more than 6 or so platys in a 39 tall with an angel, but I've never kept the two together. I've kept species only for angels and angels with some small catfish but other than that I don't have more than a few years experience with them.
Onto how you said one platy killed the others, I'd always recommend quarantine of new fish for at least 3 weeks or even more to prevent spreading disease to within your already stocked tank. It's not a big deal with cheaper fish like platys but once you start moving up in prices, losing 5 or 6 $40 fish can really hurt, and even that isn't a super high price.
I wish you the best of luck!
