Talking hey bearwithfish

i have a question for you. i want to breed either platies or guppies to feed my future leaf fish. could you give me some major info on this. they will be in a 35 gall with 4 corries and 1 honey gourami. i would like to have a lot of fish repopulating because my leaf fish will need FOOD! what would reproduce and grow faster? guppies or platies? any other fish reproduce faster? what quality of platies or guppies should i breed? is petco quality good enough? would the babies survive on thier own (i can feed them baby food)? im only allowed to have 3 tanks so i cant have a baby tank. would some of them get eaten by my gourami? im fine with that. would it be hard to get the fish out to feed? i can keep the tank really clean so that isnt my worry. will a lot of the females die in child birth? i am asking bearwithfish this mainly because i know he has experience but anyone else wants to chime in is welcome to

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.

Larry LaPrise, the man that wrote "The Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at the age of 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.

Maybe I can help a little till bearwithfish get's here...
When I had Platy & Guppy I can honestly say my Guppy produced much more fry per 1 pregnancy then the platy ever did.
What you wanna get is healthy GOOD looking fish, something that already looks cricket or skinny won't do for breeding for long.
And yes the Gourami will more likely then not snack them up before you get to get them out, so you may wanna get one of these lil breeder boxes added into your tank, so before the mom is ready you can add her in there, let her have babies and then put her back into the tank. Also that way its easier for you to catch them out for feeding.
To raise properly you'd need to feed them baby food 3-4xday (just enough what they will eat up, don't overfeed)
Mine had baby's ~every 6 weeks (depends on Temp & health) and then always around 20-25.
More likely then not, if you were to buy 5 gals at the store right now, they'd all be pregnant already and deliver you fry w/out guy in the tank even. So really all you'd need is 1-2 guys on a handful gals.

well i bought 5guys and 10galls from the person selling them here. i think im gonna make a breeding net that will fit in the corner of my tank and just have that there, i might even make it big enough for all the females to fit in and all the males to stay out, incase i have to many babies.

I would do mollies. They give you alot more and are big enough to feed when they come out. They can have up to 80 or more fry at a time. They get a 1/4 of an inch in a month so they dont grow that fast. You will only need 2 females and 1 male. They will not eat there own, once in a blue moon they will tho. So no need for seperating them. Just keep the temp at 76 to 82 and you will have lots of babys........5 guys an 10 galls, With that many you will have thousands of fry. and with mollies you wouldnt need a breeder net unles you put other kinds of fish in with them.

You may have 5 fry that will make it if you dont use the net. so its a good choice. What kind of tetras and gourami? Most tetras will eat the heck out of fry.
