Hi, so if you couldnt tell by my name, I am new to having a fish tank.
Me and my roommate recently purchased a 29 gallon tank. And without doing to much research we started filling it with fish(bad mistake, i know). We got an idea from some of the employees at our local fish store but im still not sold on our tank community.
Our fish tank currently has 4 tiger barbs, 2 red tailed sharks, and 1 chinese algae eater.
Now I keep reading and hearing different things from different people, and so this leads me to a couple questions so I can get my facts straight.
1. Is it a bad idea to have 2 red tailed sharks in the same tank?
2. Is a 29 Gal tank even big enough for 2 let alone 1 red tailed shark? (we got them when they were really young, and the guy at the pet store said they would be fine, then read on the web that its not a good idea)
3. What kind of upkeep does this need? We were told to change about 20% of the water each week for the first month, then once every month or so. Weve had it 3 weeks, and its not looking all that clean, could it be the filter? How often do we change those? And do we ever clean out the rocks at the bottom, they are filled with old food and poop im guessing, is this normal?
4. We want to add some live plants, any good ideas for plants? (we have some moss and a littler fern, not sure the proper names)
Please help, I feel kind of lost in this whole fish tank thing and just looking for some guidance and figured this was the right place to come.
As far as our fish set up is concerned, we do love our 2 red tails, but along with the tiger barbs and the algae eater were not particularly attached to them and would start over if we need to (our fish store gives us store credit for fish).
Any help would be wonderful
