Gravel Substrate stuff?

Stupid Stupid questions but-
what does gravel substrate actually do?
I have boiled ( 60 seconds a rock, VERY carefully) tumbled rocks, and i clean them (hot water and cloth) when i clean my tanks... But i read that i should have Substrate, so i bought some white gravel substrate... and it says rinse till the water runs clear to remove dust. So i did, and it still has dust in it when i put it in the tank, i have rinsed it VERY well probably 15 times, and it still has dusty (like ground up rocks) stuff. I suspect its just the rocks wearing each other down during shipment and stuff... How do i get rid of it? or does it not matter if it is there? I don't want to put it in till i know for sure

Gravel is a good place for beneficial bacteria to grow, also a good place for fish poop to fall and be less noticeable. If you have a good filter, it should take the dust out of the water within a couple days.

You try cleaning the gravel in a pasta strainer?

I use the glass gems in my bowls. They are easier to keep clean. I don't have filters either.

Not sure what the problem is. None of the gravel I have used has broke up like that. I guess if it all sinks it should be ok to use. Going back to your rocks or trying some different gravel would be some other options.
