God bless all those---

I am hoping that everyone who comes to this site as a member or a guest will read this thread. Foremost I want to say * GOD BLESS ALL THOSE PERSONS * who CYCLE their tanks FISH LESS, FISH LESS, FISH LESS. to permit a live animal "FISH" to reside in a tank that is not cycled or is in the process of cycling is downright cruel, inhumane and insensitive. How can persons have fish as pets, even to the point of memorializing them when they pass away, spend lots of money on them, care for them, worry about their health and well being, and yet cycle their tanks with fish?? I can understand where a newbie is not aware of the cycle thing, but we all who "do" fish need to try to get this message across to them, usually their posts indicate their lack of knowledge of the cycle process. an uncycled/cycling tank destroys the fishes ability to take oxygen into their blood and suffocation is inevitable. the tissues of their gills become hard, whitish in color and shriveled/distorted, their vital organs are damaged & even if they survive the cycle will suffer an early death due to this damage. of course some folks would argue this scenario but facts are facts. to my knowledge there is no learned fish keeper who advocates cycling with fish. rugie

Opinions vary. As stated, I agree that using fish to allow a tank to mature or cycle is unnecessary but it is possible to do without lethal levels of ammonia causing harm to the fish. In most cases too many fish, too large of fish, added too quickly, contribute to that which you describe. And in that scenario I agree with you one hundred percent. Fishless way would be safest for fish but If one does not have ADULT supervision I would hesitate to suggest use of any chemicals. Dead prawn (shrimp) or simply adding fish food would be safer for some.

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.
