fruit fly breeding

hello all,

For a science experiment on genetics, I am trying to breed and experiment on fruit flies, because of their simple genetic structure. I thought of asking my science teacher, but as it's christmas break and he is not available, who better to ask than my TFK buddies? (actually there are probably a lot of places better to ask, but I'm too lazy ) I assume at least a few of you have bred them to feed for live food or something. Could you inform me on their diet, space requirements, etc.? I find them all over my house (especially near bananas), so I'm sure I live in an appropriate climate for them to breed. Thanks a lot!

It is very close to 30 years since I cultured wingless fruit flies (Drosophila hydei). I believe I used Cream of Wheat mixed with sufficient water to make a sort of paste that stuck in the jar.

Wingless fruit flies are better; obviously, they cannot fly around, so they are easier to keep in a container and easier to feed fish. Hatchetfish just love them.

Here is some info:

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

As always a good place to start as always is wikipedia Drosophila melanogaster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and since its well researched the article is quite good. Sadly wiki doesn't have a page for Drosophila hydei
