If you're only looking for fish, then a betta is your best bet. You could probably get away with a few endler live bearers or guppies if they are all male, but it's far from ideal. In a 5 gallon tank, the water quality can go south quickly with too many fish.
But if you want something different, then there are quite a few different shrimp that would be quite happy in the tank (red cherry shrimp and ghost shrimp being the most common) or alternatively, a couple of African dwarf frogs are always fun.
If you do decide to go with slightly larger fish, then you should definitely get some live plants in the aquarium to help keep the water quality decent, and some Malaysian trumpet snails would also be a good idea to eat any extra food and algae.
