Fish have good memories

For anyone out there who still believes the old wives' tale that fish only have a five second memory, here is some evidence to the contrary.

A couple of years ago I purchased two juvenile kribensis that eventually paired up. Because they were breeding like rabbits and I didn't want to deal with all of those fry, I have had this fish separated in two different tanks since June 2008. Today, I added the female back to the tank with the male and presto! - they're at the breeding ritual after about ten minutes together.

Never heard of that "old wives tale" but I've known fish aren't completely stupid.

Can't you sell the fry to the pet stores?

I bet all those fry are going to end up in Mr. Jack Dempsey's belly. Either that, or mean Mr. Jewel

You can, sort of. Last time I sold a batch of 34 fry for $10 total, and it took a loooooooong time to grow them to about 1" so that the store would even take them. By the time they were that size, they were fighting amongst themselves and not getting along with their parents, either. I didn't really want to deal with the hassle.

Now, though, I've got a killifish in the tank that will, uh, take care of the problem before it becomes a problem.
