Expirament

So, my Phys. Sci. teacher has a Biology class that is doing an "expirament". They have to create a self-sustaining aquarium-- and they can't feed it. They can't have a filter. They can't have a heater. I want to try to recreate this, successfully, without harming the fish. I was dismayed to come in this morning to find goldfish & female bettas, zebra danios, mystery snails, hatchet fish, etc. in these tanks. ;-; They were not planted well, and had no cover. The biggest tank is a 20 H.

So, for a 29 G, would this work?

10 x Amano Shrimp (Cardina multidentata)
10 x Oto (Otocinclus vittatus)
1 x Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

I suppose I need more of food for the Angel, because the Amano wouldn't reproduce fast enough. Do Angels eat plants like Anarchis? After the "2-Month-Test" I will go out and buy a heater, but I'm super interested in this & want to see if it will work without a filter. I will intervene if this gets too far out of hand. Oh, and should I get a "small" sized angel, so it has room to grow? Or should I get a "large" so it has a better survival chance?

If not an Angel, what other fish? I thought about an Oscar, but I have nowhere to put it when it gets bigger. And, it would eat the shrimp. Most Chichilids are too big/get too big. Is there any small omnivores/carnivores that would work? Suggestions?
