Death of a Beta

Got my GF's daughter a Beta for her 5 gallon tank about a week ago, yesterday morning I got up and couldnt find him in the tank. I pulled the intake tube to the filter and saw a fin sticking out, so I turned the filter off and he came swimming out. He lost most of all his fin's and a some scales missing from his hind end. Well he still was swimming and eating when I left for work. I came home and again he was missing, turned the filter off and pulled the intake tube off and he fell out dead. Poor guy didnt have the strength to fight the filter. I have to find a screen to put on the filter intake tube, or Im thinking of pulling it out and just putting a sponge on the side of the tank and a bubble maker to move the water some.

I'm so sorry about your betta! Yes, the intake tube should be covered.

Sponge filter are optimal, but I ended up going for an underrated HOB (Rated for 1-3g, on my 5.5g tank) with a nylon stocking over the intake. The nylon slows the flow as well as preventing the betta's fins from getting sucked up so all in all I am pretty happy with it.
