Clown Loach Appeared!

So is it possible for a Clown Loach to live in the substrate for a month or more? I recently cleaned the tank maybe 3 days ago removing all plants and decorations and driftwood. I saw all my fish I had in the tank since they had no place to hide (except the peacock eel which usually is in the substrate. I had two clown loaches maybe a month ago, one seemingly just disappeared and I figured my oscar just ate it at night and my second one died maybe 2 weeks ago (unknown reason). I havent seen a clown loach in my tank since then. Today I lifted up my centerpiece, and out swam a clown loach? Just yesterday I put a new piece of driftwood in my tank but it wasn't transported in water and is about a 15 min drive from where I bought it. Can anybody help me figure out where this fish came from?! If this is the same one that disappeared over a month ago, how could that happen?

the funny thing about loaches is that they will hide anywhere they can, sometimes to their own perril.
it is quite possible for them in panic to burry themselves.
you could have burried him under the substrate when removing stuff,he could have
shifted very quickly when something was pulled up and got covered.
i had it happen to me with a bristlenosed cat,i re stripped my 4ft tank looking
for her.

Clown loaches and Oscar would not be a good fit in the longterm in my opinion. Might work for a while if oscar is small and loaches are larger.

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.
