This is fine as is. In a planted tank I would just remove the carbon. The pads in this filter will act exactly the same as a sponge. There must be some sort of pad, it will be white or maybe bluish, and the water flows through it. Or it may be a chunk of filter cotton/wool. Doesn't matter, it's the important part as it clears the water.
