changing Filter

What is the general consensus about changing filters? I see that some recommend just rinsing them and reusing. I currently have 3 filters ( one has 2 chambers and the other has 1). I try not to change the filters when I do gravel cleaning or directly before and after I add fish..... I usually change one when I notice that the water isn't as clear....Anyway, just was wondering about peoples opinion....and what has worked and not worked for the more experienced in the past.....

I don't have that much experience . But heres my opinion, take it with a grain of salt. I can see shaking the filter in tank water and reusing it once, especially with 3 filters. At some point that filter should be changed. Use judgment as to when to replace it. I think the important thing is dont change them all at the same time for the bacterias sake.

The only reason to change a filter is if you need need carbon and you aren't willing to throw a small media bag in your filter, I honestly never change my filters because its a waste of money if the filter isn't falling apart. Carbon is only needed for new tanks to clear up the water, an established tank shouldn't have any issues with cloudy water and all carbon does is pull micro particles from the water. What I do is rinse my filters off very well when the flow rate starts to go down, I also break down the filter and scrub the impeller and all the tubing to clear up any algae that might be clogging up the intake. Also note that all my tanks are relatively large so they can soak up a lot more impurities then a smaller tank but even with a 20-30 gallon I wouldn't change the filter more then once every 6 months and if I were starting to get cloudy water these would do a better job then a new filter.

Agree with not changing it until they are falling apart. Just swish it in the bucket with removed tank water and put it back. If you need to change one, replace only one cartridge at a time.

It depends on the type of filter. They all need to be maintained every month, but as far as actually replacing the cartridge goes some last much longer than others. The foam and biomedia in AquaClears can be used for years. Other filters won't last as long, depending on the the type and stocking of the tank.

Ok guys. Thanks. About cleaning out the inside of the actually filter..... do you just wipe them down with a cloth wet with tank water? I have never done any of that and I have had this tank up for about a year...... Do you have a site or link that could give me the rundown? Tank wasn't cloudy, just noticed some "Dust" floating.

Probably doesn't matter much. With my canister filters I rinse the canister (after removing all the baskets and pads) and wipe it with a paper towel. Media can be rinsed and re-used until it no longer "works," which varies depending upon the media.
