Can someone tell me if my Betta Fish is bloated?

I really am not sure. He was pretty bloated on Thursday night. I fasted him until Saturday night he looked slimmer. Now he is kinda looking bloated again! GRRR! My problem is lack of experience and not knowing what to look for.

Any who - he eats Omega One - Betta Buffett Pellets. I was giving him 4 in the morning and 4 at night. Cut back to 3 and 3 - he still way looking bloated (especially the end of this past week). Since I started feeding him Saturday I have been giving him 3 in the morning and 2 at night.

I haven't seen any poop since I last cleaned his tank on Wednesday.

What makes me wonder is I noticed he is getting "fatter" around his pectoral fins and like behind and under them. I didn't know if HE ACTUALLY is getting FAT - of if he's bloated.

Any advice? I know he hates me right now always looking at him checking his belly!

He is definitely not bloated. He doesn't even look that plump to me, I think your fish is fine. You see him everyday though so you have a better gauge on the changes, fish can get fat but he may just be filling out. How long have you had him? If he is a younger fish he may still have a bit of growing to do.

Fish will gorge if food is available and can often get quite distended abdomens. This is not usually a problem and a bit of fasting usually resolves the issue. Repeated gorging may have a long term effect but may not.

I wouldn't worry too much but kudos to spotting changes in your fish you are obviously montoring his status closely.

If it came out of no where and you're worried... it may be a good idea to feed him about half a green pea. boil some water, drop the pea in and let it cook for about 30 seconds (just enough to soften it), pop off the shell and cool it in cool water, then give it to him. the added fiber helps keep things flowing.. i'd suggest roughly half a pea one a week! :)

I appreciate the responses. I have been keeping a SUPER close eye on him because about a week and a half ago I saw a small hole in his fin. It looks to be healing up - but looking at him constantly for signs of FIN ROT. I think he is ok on that front.

I am going to keep an eye on his bloating. I think I am going to try 5 pellets a day as opposed to 6.
