Arowana help

HI EVERYONE,

Was at a LFS and i say a silver arowana about 4" and i was interested in getting one.. I also inquired about tank size and i was checking out a 55 gallon tank for the silver arowana... Is a 55 galon tank ok and are arowanas hard to care for?

THanks
Jep

It depends upon species, but the most commonly seen in stores is the Silver Arowana, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, from South America. This fish attains up to 4 feet. A 55g tank is no where near sufficient, you need a tank long enough to at least double the fish's mature length and at least as wide as the fish is long so it can turn without bending. These really are not home aquarium fish unless you have an indoor pond in the basement.

The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. [unknown source]

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
