Actually I like to think of fish in tiers. Teir 1 fish are my favorites, and I will do backflips to keep them (koi, goldfish, betta, Pangio loaches). Tier 2 fish are pretty freaking awesome, and I'll keep them if water parameters/space allow (cardinal tetra, endler's, gourami, blind cave tetra, mountain redbelly dace). Tier 3 are neat, and I'd keep them if nothing else fits there (a lot of fish fall here). The tier 4 fish are the ones I have almost no desire to keep.
But those are just the fish I can have as pets. I also love a ton more fish that I can't keep (or it would be very difficult/expensive) like sturgeon, atlantic cod, bluefin tuna, brook trout, coelacanths, and the list goes on.
