I have an established 35 gallon hex that is empty. Here's my plans for stocking:

12 fancy guppies
1 dwarf gourami
1 mystery snail

OR

6 sunset platy
1 dwarf gourami
1 apple snail

OR

12 fancy guppies
1 male betta
1 mystery snail

OR

6 sunset platy
1 male betta
12 fancy guppies

The pH will be neutral, so the snail and gourami (the only inhabitants that care about the pH) will be happy.
Will the fish get along? do I have a big enough filter (canister filter, 350 gph)? I really ant to have a gourami, because I have 2 in a 10 gallon, and they're a bit agressive.

Livebearers need a high PH. So keeping guppies with a gourami is not a good idea. Also the tails of guppies are likely going to be ripped off by any gourami(or betta as both are closely related.)

I would move one or both of the gourami to the 35g(what species of gourami are they?) and build around them.

OK. As I said they are dwarf gouramis. I had 2 in my 10 gallon. After what you said, I moved one of them to the 35. Now, since it is an average-sized tank, could I do diamond tetras?

I am stocking a very similar tank for some friends of mine. I plan to have 1 dwarf or honey gourami, 10 neon tetra, and 6 bronze corydoras for the bottom. The problem with hex tanks is that they don't give fish much room to swim laterally. This greatly limits the fish choices because while the volume of water may be large enough to hold some fishes, it may not give them enough room to swim. Diamond tetra like a tank that is at least 36 inches wide so they have plenty of swimming room (by clicking the highlighted name you will be taken to our profile on the fish). That's a 3-foot-wide tank. I think you should be shooting for some smaller fish like cardinal tetra, neon tetra, or mosquito rasbora.
