these are geneticaly modified or thats what ive been told. i do not belive they are died but have had some kind of genetic splicing. i could be wrong as this is just what several of my lfs have told me.

They're zebra danios whose genes have been modified. I don't like them. They look ugly IMO despite not being dyed and are more expensive than the original zebra danios. Why spend more when you can get plenty other fish with natural beauty?

thanks for all the replys. i think they look cool. i just wanted to make sure that they werent injected. if their genes were altered that means if they gave birth their fry would be glofish too, right?

how easy to breed are they?

That is still similar to the original zebra danios.

I think they're trademarked or copyrighted or something though, so you cannot sell them (or at least sell them and get caught).
The term would be "patented". They have reached the Asian markets and can be distributed even at fry size.I doubt people distributing them can get caught despite the rule that these are patented.

well if they bred could i return the fry to my lfs for store credit and not get in trouble? :?

Where are you located? I don't see the rule of these fish being patented enforced strictly at all but better not do it just to be on the safe side. I don't see the rule enforced here strictly in Asia.

i live in the U.S. i have never heard of a rule like this but i just wanted to be sure.

i dont think patent laws extend to giveing it away unless its in masses. if ur tank gets overcrowded because of fry and u give away the fry i dont think that their is anything they can do about that. it would be like buying a patented boat and then giveing it back to a dealership that doesnt have them because u got another.

Personally, I think patenting an animal is ridiculous. Protecting them is one thing, but if you can get a patent on your "creation" when does it end? Digusting...
(I'm going to breed a guinea pig with my chinchilla and call it a chillipig. When I get it patented I'll sue anyone who tries to do the same, because I'm God afterall. Oh wait... no I'm not.)
Sorry, had to add some cynical humor when I read that glofish were "patented".

Enjoy your glofish though, I doubt you have much to be worried about. And I think that they are beautiful. Why not have a tank full as a night light? ;)

well they say there genetically modified but i think they use chemicals.. well that could still be genetically modifying

They were originally created to test waters for pollution. The glowing gene was suppressed and would only show up in polluted waters. The ones for the trade have the gene switched on, so they always glow.

Also they have every right to patent these fish and make and breeding AND selling for a profit illegal. They went to great lengths to develop these fish in labs and put a lot of money into them. If everyone was allowed to breed and sell them, there is the chance that those who made them would overall loose money from there creation.

This debate about glofish had me thinking about other things in our daily lives that we just take for granted and never question.....yes, these fish are genetically altered, and some people will take a stand on whether that is good or bad, but lets look at other things that have been altered to fit our lifestyles and the glofish debate seems a little trivial......How many people drink milk?......They have been messing with dairy cows for years to produce more milk, by injecting hormones to influence there production, thus a few generations later, the cows offspring produces more milk without the hormones........Same for chickens and their egg production and the growth hormones that are injected to produce a chicken that is all breast with skinny little legs........I dont know if these processes are "patented", but to me its the same results.......How about fruits and veggies?.........The selective growing of certain types of plants to produce more fruit or veggies, started in someone's lab........Its a natural process with a little jump start......What about dogs?..........I see all these designer breeds that are now being sold as another species.....Lets breed 2 different dogs and make up a name and charge a crazy price for them....Thats not a new breed, thats a mutt, IMO.........Those types of breeds cant be patented, and if they are, who is enforcing such laws?...

What it comes down to, IMO......Like them or not, there is nothing wrong with glofish......Taking a stance about them being genetically altered is fine, but to me it seems a little hypocritical to berate anyone who feels different about it......I have to go now and BBQ some chicken breasts and toss my salad, and pour myself a glass of milk!
