So I figured I would move my journal here since its not just betta fish oriented now.
I have one 40 Breeder set up and my 20 long off to the side.
In the 40 I have currently,
-1 Male German Blue Ram
-2 Female German Blue Rams
-1 African Featherfin Squeaker Catfish
-6 baby Bristlenose plecos
-3 Glowlight Tetras
-2 Guppies
I plan on putting the guppies and the tetras back into the 20 soon. Just want to keep the 40 settled for right now.
The BN Plecos I will be finding homes for once they're old enough to gender pick out.
I plan on only keeping two.
I do want to do some small schools of fish but for now I'm just trying to keep the core fish happy.
I do plan on breeding my pair of GBR's once they are settled in. Koyo is not playing easy with them right now though.
Now its time for pictures!
This is for some reason where Squeakz sleeps during the day.... Why? I'm not sure.
Very nice start. Is that squeaker cat similar to my Lace catfish? He looks very much like him. Mine is very secretive in the day as well. He is growing really fast, how about yours?
I believe that is another common name. It should be Synodontis eupterus as the genus and species. There are so many different variations on their colors too!
I do like the fact that juvenile to adult they change into their appearance too. I think they look pretty cute both ways!
I also believe they are nocturnal, its funny how much mine eats at night. I put in 3 shrimp pellets right after lights out... They were all gone by morning. Not even a trace!
Mine is very dark colored and is getting the high fin now. Nice to know someone else keeping one.
I was looking at something this morning I could offer him as a new hideout, as I think he is outgrowing the one he has. I want something inert{ceramic?} and dark colored so it's not too noticeable. Can't find anything I really like yet. Ken's fish has some pretty cool ones.
I just put in a serpents head tomb thingy majig yesterday so I will see if he moved to it with lights on today. I love how they even sleep upside down too. It's incredible! They seem to like tight spaces though... they really are cats.
How big is yours right now?
Hmm. I would say a good 2 inches, maybe a bit more, but his dorsal looks as tall as he is long. He was tiny when he arrived here. He just came out and I noticed he has these new markings down either side of his nose. He is a PIG. No wonder he is growing so fast!
Ahhh! Okay. Mine is around 3 inches I would say. I just got him on.... I want to say Tuesday... Yes. He's a fatty. I always put a few shrimp pellets for him with some flakes right before lights out.
Here is the 40 today! And some funny pictures of Squeakz. I walked in to see... A tail hanging out of the barrels... Even the rams were like... Uh? Mom? What is that?!
I came around the corner to find a very silly sight.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!??!?!?!
He was very offended at the picture, and proceeded to swim under the moopani instead.
Here is the 40 today! I moved some plants around and such... I love the tea color the water is turning. The 40 also had its first water change! Only about 10% though so the rams don't get upset.
I also worked on redoing the 20 as well. No pics unfortunately.
Thank you Aussie!!! I've been trying to work hard on it.
Here's some updates! The bristlenose babies have almost doubled in size now, my bacopa is huuuuuge! I just put in some parrots feather and myrio from Lilnaugrim. I have a few new ornaments and the drift wood.
MY RAMS STARTED TO BUILD A NEST!!!! I was so excited! I think they might have stopped now but it was absolutely adorable! The female was literally shoveling the sand with her front and pectorals. The issue is that I have some gravel underneath the sand that came with my sand from my other tank to help cycle earlier. She found it unfortunately and I think they may have given up from that. Good news, I have a short video of it! I'm going to try to fix it but for now its sideways.. :/
aww. Rams are so adorable.. I love those cute little fish. and I'm in the feather fin club too! lol I love mine...big fat 5 inch guy. Very funny fish ...he smacks unruly fish in his tank with his caudal fin to stop the misbehavior
No babies unfortunately! I think they got discouraged with their nest. Oh well. Its pretty big for their first try!
Agent I love my featherfin. He is the strangest fish I've ever seen! He's one of the biggest fish in my tank so he doesn't get pestered too much. The only one who tried was Koyo and he really smacked her hard with his tail. She never bothered him again though!
I love how when he sneaks out of his hiding place (Of which he's usually stuffed himself into) he slinks and then as soon as he realizes I can see him his fin goes straight up and he zooms away. And I love that he sleeps upside down. Its fantastic!
Oh well, maybe later you get some babies off the rams!
The featherfin sounds like an interesting addition to a fish tank, they sound so lively and fun!
Oh don't you worry about your featherfin being pestered too much . They are very capable fish . Mine is in a 72 of absolutely psychotic African mbuna males. Improper stock choices rarely live more then an hr I there . And when I say improper .. I mean to them not as a rule ..
Anyway my featherfin has resided with those crazies for over a yr and never an issue. He can challenge the tank boss for going near his spot if he wants with no consequence .
Aussie they are really weird and funny fish. Catfish in general are just strange, but syno's even more so! I drop a shrimp pellet in and he goes zooming out for it and drags it back into his lair under the driftwood now.
Agent the only concern I would have is if he ends up too aggressive toward the rams. I tried adding ember tetras and I think he ate them too... :/ I really want to do schools of small fish but now I'm worried that they won't survive. Those suckers aren't cheap either! Though I paid more for Squeakz than I did for them. It must be pretty funny to watch him show everyone who's boss though. XD I've only seen mine do it the first night and I couldn't help but to laugh.
I don't know.. As I haven't kept mine with rams but I think they should be fine. I think it's mainly about fish respecting the featherfins space .. It's not hard to get a ram to understand other territorial fish I'd think. Tetra though I'm sure don't care or respect that lol. If it helps your concerns .. My tank boss in my African cichlid tank (where my featherfin is ) spawned with the female in there and one of their fry made it. He's been growing up in there for I would say perhaps 4months now .. I can't recall . While it's highly shocking that a tank of all dominant male African cichlids hasn't eaten this fry (only 1inch at most so far) ... I think it shows me the featherfins desire to eat it is near to nothing . I say that because the two have lived in caves adjacent to eachother for all but 1 month . He leaves fish alone till they are in need of being told to chill lol. It's really a rather unruly rambunctious tank.
So all but one of my eight ember tetras disappeared.... Squeakz seems pretty happy about that.
The rams are adorable. They come flying up as soon as someone walks into the room. Very personable.
The tank also exploded in plants.... EVERYWHERE.
Thanks to Lilnaugrim I have a plethora of water sprite too!
Here is one of my new best friends... My assassin snail. They are munching on the MTS I had still sneak over into the 40.
Here's the tank!!
The BN Plecos are 1.5"-1.75"! They are growing quick!
More than likely!!! I think the rams might have bullied them and then Squeakz got what was left. I put in honey gourami's last night, one male and three females. They are wild coloration, absolutely gorgeous. They investigated the rams and the gbr's were like NOPE and started to poof up at them so the gouramis were like < NOPE! And ran away. It was interesting to watch. The glowlights are back in there for now as well. I need to add some crushed coral still to buffer. My water has no kh whatsoever. Soooo I need to work on that.
But yes!!! I love my rams! My boy won first place last night at my local fish society's bowl show. Our female betta for spawning won 3rd place as well! We were really happy. ^^ We have winner fish I guess!
There was a long finned gold ram as well... I'm thinking about looking into long finned GBR's. They would be really cute.
So! I have many updates! Brace yourselves. Pictures are coming! Finally got the camera charged.
Lil gave me her honey gouramis..The male is so handsome!!! I added them in... Then I found what I hoped to be a mated pair of bolivian's but I don't know if we actually got the right ones. Either way I'm not sure if I really like them or not.
I also picked up a little angel fish! I was thinking about getting one but I really wasn't in any rush. We were just walking around Petco when I looked up to see this little angelfish with his face up in front of the glass. He was really really cute. And he still is! Its strange, no other fish messes with him. They either don't care or he's already put them in their place.
My GBR Male won first place at a bowl show! I honestly thought Isis would win (She's our breeding female betta, black copper and gorgeous!!).
The rams are looking for another place to spawn again!!!!
They've been cleaning off multiple spots, unsure of where they want to spawn. I provided them with a flat stone to clean off as well. Right now the choice spots seem to be the serpents head, the flat rock, and the space in the sand next to the flat rock.
I'm trying to decide how I want to do my first GBR spawn too.... I'm not sure if I just want to grab the eggs and do it myself the first time or see what the pair does.
I love your angels too!!!! Nimbus is absolutely stunning.. which is the other reason I snagged him. Any advice for angel keeping? I'm just going to stick to him... but I dunno really all THAT much about them. He's hilarious though. Does not like my boyfriend at all.
I JUST SAW THE CUTE ST THING!!!! There was a pair of rams I had passed up on in a lfs last week and I regret it... I walked in on them spawning today! I sat there watching for a good while. I feel a little guilty though.... I bought them half way through... I have pictures of the eggs too!
I feel a little guilty... I gave them a huge amount of live brine shrimp because I'm going away... Nimbus went crazy and ate so many his tummy is the size of a nickle... and he himself is only about a half - dollar size... it's pretty cute but not good for him.
Updates!!!
I adopted a 2 year old pearscale fantail goldfish that my mother has fallen in love with. I brought him home to heal him up and adopt him out... nope! XD my mother is buying all new tank stuff and a friend for him and he's staying.
I put both pairs of rams together in the 40. They have finally settled to either side of the tank. They don't seem happy about it but they should be fine.
Nimbus doesn't like friends.. I tried another baby angel. He disagreed. I also tried celestial pearl danios/galaxy rasboras... All but 2 out of 24 died... pretty shocked still.
Squeaks the featherfin is getting big! I saw him for the first time in a little bit the other day. His dorsal fin is huuuuuuuge! And he's absolutely gorgeous!!
I added 3 false Julii cats as well... I love juliis... and I hope squeaks doesn't eat them.. so far so good.
Lilnaugrim and I should hopefully be starting our betta spawn after we both get back from vacation. And as I'm leaving I'm noticing the new pair of gbr's gearing up to lay eggs again.. so we shall see what happens in a week when I get back!
