Because it's Christmas Tree moss, and not Java Moss. Christmas Tree moss is really hard to find here in the states. At least that's what I found when I was looking for it everywhere and finally had to order it out of Malaysia.

Ya, i know how you feel all of the moss in my area is expensive, 10 bucks for a small clump of java i don't even want to think about the price of java moss.

These are all considered high-tech though right? I see CO2 systems in most of them and they're all pretty brightly lit.

I can't say I've ever seen one of those type of tanks without CO2.

CO2 is god for those aquariums same as the best fertilizers money can buy. Light must also be perfect and those aquariums get tested daily and whatever nutrient is missing is aded. Takes time, energy, patience, money and most of all knowledge combined with the love for the hobby.
Keeping a tank like those is like keeping a very expensive supercar. If you dont have all it takes stick to a Ford, they(fords) dont have the speed, looks or sound of a supercar but they are easy to keep. Cant find a better comparison than that.
