I don't know if they eat diatoms, I've never had an issue with those that didn't clear up with a little bit of time. . . they ARE fantastic algae eaters, though, and just neat little critters in general.
Now if it would just warm up a little so I can order some lol. Can't go ordering any critters when it's below 0

I decided for the fun of it to just peek in my canister since it's been over a month. I'm really glad I did. There was slime on top when I took the cover off. Like snot slime. Whitish-clear looking, and gross. I shook it off into some filter water and kept pulling the trays out. Everything else was looking good, but the white/fine filter pads were caked with muddy muck. It was so thick none of it would come off in the bucket of filter water. I tried to squeeze them and just got bits of brown all over my hands and the filter pads tightened up more. So I replaced those couple pads with pillow batting. Yuck. I'll have to make sure to check it routinely for sure. I meant to, but I just kept forgetting with finals and all lately.

You can wash those things in the sink and reuse them. Better yet, replace then with foam. Pillow stuff is going to clog very fast. It's good for a final stage of filtration, not the first.

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta

I have blue sponge-like stuff before that. This is my final filtration before my bio-filtration (bio-balls and ceramic noodles).

Well, our 20g ended up being a flop. We had one betta in it for the past month and she passed away last night. I would like to keep it cycled just in case we need it, but not sure how to keep the bacteria alive.

Our 55g has been doing the same. Brown algae still a big problem. Still too cold to order nerites. I did add one of our old filters to it though. So we have the SunSun 302 canister plus a Tetra 10-30i.

(sorry the pics are so fuzzy and grainy...)
