A ram died today. Gabe was getting upset watching the fish and for the first time ever I heard him say "mama something's wrong with the fish." From a two year old, I got worried. Sure enough, I got to the tank and a ram was on it's side just flopping on the bottom next to the new piece of driftwood. I got him out and into a container filled with tank water and added new water to it to float and keep him separated and close to the surface. Over the next few minutes I watched as he continued to spin in circles on the bottom of the container on his side. I got my shoes on to run to WalMart and then he stopped gasping and flopping, and he passed away.

I have no idea what happened. There were no signs of distress at any time, even earlier this morning. It just happened. I'm paranoid that it has something to do with the weird white specs on the driftwood. I took it out right away, scrubbed it, boiled it again, and now it's soaking in hot water again. All the other fish seem fine.

Got the driftwood back in the tank and all my fish are completely avoiding that side of the tank. I'm getting extremely paranoid about having wood in the tank now :-/

Our albino bristlenose passed away yesterday. I can't figure out what it is with our tank but it cannot support snails and now it can't support plecos. I'm a little sad.

I've had a bad ammonia problem for almost a week: Serious Ammonia Spike

I don't know what caused it, but it seems to slowly be getting better. I started adding Stability, and today I added four hornwort stems to float in the tank. I also separated more water sprites from the floating broken branches I have in the tank and have roughly 20 baby plants floating now as well. I'm hoping to transfer most of them to our 20 gallon, plant a couple more in this tank and then give the rest to my brother.

I also removed the serpae tetras from the tank. I moved them upstairs because they seemed to be randomly nipping the others, and ganged up on my guppy. The tank is much calmer without them and my crazy guppy in the tank. Everyone is really active now, and my corys have taken to swimming all over the tank instead of just minimally moving around the bottom.

WOAH!!! O.O

SOOOO sorry to be this far behind in keeping up with your log! Looks like it's been a rough few weeks for you, momma T__T *hugs*

Glad to see that you've had some of our best helping you along the way. . . you seem to be doing everything perfectly, and still having more than your fair share of issues with this setup. I'm sad for you!!! But hang in there, girl! The darkest hour is just before dawn and all that, right?!!

I'm so sorry for your losses, from the last posts I'm seeing on the ammonia thread, it seems as if things are starting to settle down for you? Though I'm unsure as to what the root of your issues have been, *fingers firmly crossed* that this is the last of them, and the tank will settle down and establish itself beautifully from here on out.

Any updates??? All good news I hope!? A belated happy Halloween to little Gabey, too!!! ^_^

Thanks Jes! Gabe was such a little stinker so we didn't go out to many places trick-or-treating, but he was the cutest little vampire I've ever seen (though I'll admit I'm biased lol).

Ammonia has been between .5 and 1 for over a week now. My ammonia alert dot says ammonia is at .05 or below at all times though, so I've not been too concerned. I've been feeding every other day, and was doing larger water changes, but after I got more Prime, I've been only doing a water change every three days. Everyone is acting fine. I'm still adding Stability, last dose is tomorrow.

My plants have really taken off too! I cannot believe the difference the Flourish has made. New growths within hours of each dose. I'm still considering taking my swords out though. I've been having to remove faded/thinned leaves just as often as new ones pop up. The leaves that don't thin down to nothing end up covered in diatomes and stop growing after they're an inch or two long. I just don't see them thriving in this tank. I'll give them another month or so until I know they've used up their fert and see how they're doing or try them in the 20.

Hmm...

Jes, you must be good luck

I just did my nightly water testing and my ammonia is down to .25 (which could be from the Prime), 0 nitrites, and nitrates are between 5-10 (which was normal before all this mess because of all my plants eating the nitrates, they never got above 10).

I think we're cycled again. I've vacuumed out the tanks poop collection area only removing 5 gallons of water in the process, adding back a new 5 gallons, and let out a sigh of relief. I'm still going to test daily, but I might dare say this nightmare is over!

Before I forget, my sorority pretty much fell apart. I gave the rest of my girls to my brother, except for my tiny white girl. I'll be updating the 20 gallon here from now on too.

I can deal with being a good luck charm! ^__^

What a rough rough time you've had - sounds like all around - I'm sorry to hear about your sorority. . .
(I can change the name of this thread if you'd like to add the 20 in? Let me know what you want!)

Good call to give those swords another month or so. Almost every common sword plant that I've seen in local shops are grown emersed, and they can take quite a while to adapt. I've had some still converting after 3 months! Once they get going, there's no stopping them, tho - just keep those root tabs going!

SO glad to hear that things are finally settling for you!!!

P.S. I bet Gabe was the cutest lil' vampy baby that ever was!!!! ^_~

That would be cool if you could change the name of the thread!

I've got three more root tabs, one for each of the swords. I haven't decided yet if I dare stick those in or just leave the plants be and let them use up what's possibly still there. These ones were from WalMart. I was really surprised to see live plants at WalMart, they were in one of the tanks, and sent it home with me in a bag of water just like fish. I haven't seen anymore plants there since though... I'm not sure how they were grown initially, or how long they were at our store, or anything. If our ammonia is under control though, and I know they're not contributing to it by dying off bits at a time, I have no problem leaving it longer. It's obviously trying to grow, it's just struggling along the way ;)
