How do you care for the sand? How do you vacuum? With gravel I just use a gravel vacuum. What would I use to vacuum sand?

yeah you just vacuum as you would with gravel just dont go down as deep. and you may go a little slower at first to see how it flows until you get the hang of it. its really not that different. i know some will say only vacuum every other w/c but i do mine 1x weekly and have had no issues (well none related to my sand any how LOL)....
and there is the added bonus of it being a lot cheaper i paid 4.28 for a 50# bag of this play sand at Home Depot, just took awhile to clean it but it was worth it....

How do you clean sand before putting it in the tank? With gravel, I use a strainer. with sand, wouldn't the sand go right through the strainer?

put is in a bucket then fill with water while stiring the sand (by hand is easiest) then dump off the dirty water .. you may have to do this A LOT of times and i did mine the day before the change soi could let it soak over night after cleaning so it wouldnt float as much when it got into the tank :)..... after getting it in the tank and the water back in it will be cloudy for a little bit but mine cleared un in an hour then i put every one back in....

Sounds easy enough. Thanks! I might just do it soon. I'm really not liking my unnatural looking gravel. I need to get a smaller tank to house them in first while I do the transformation.

By the way, do you have a blackor blue background on your tank? I just bought some plants to fill in my tank more and now I'm looking for a background to make the fish really stand out. Right now I have a background with rocks. It's nice but doesn't do anything for the fish. I was thinknig black would make everything stand out, but was worried it would be too boring. I like the look of yours though

Totally Awesome, I wouldn't have either, I might just now. When I was young (like two years ago) and stupid I got red gravel, HATE it.
