My Midas Pair

These fish recently paired off and started breeding and I am very excited to see them spawning. They are in a 125 with 6 silver dollars, 3 cubans, and 2 salvini. Mom is hovering over the eggs and dad is busy guarding the perimeter.

Will post more pics when the eggs hatch

Nice :) I love the 4th pic. - looks like the fish is saying "hey back off already"

Congrats.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Interesting that you mention their lips. This fish is Amphilophus Citrinellus or Midas cichlids. They have a very close relative named Amphilophus labiatus or the red devil in wich labiatus means lips. Wild specimens of this species have big protruding lips while the citrinellus are have a shorter face and smaller lips. In fact these fish are so similar that they were bred together because people thought they were the same fish which is why if you go to the petstore and get anything labled "red devil" or "midas" it is most likely a hybrid although mine are pure midas descendant from wild parents. Here are some pics so you can see the difference. I know you didn't ask for all that but I thought i would give a little history lesson .
