The more real plants you can add the better it will be if you can add enough plants it will automatically cycle the tank. Not sure if you order stuff online but you can get plants alot cheaper online than at the stores.

I was planning on ordering some online although my girlfriend would kill me if I picked them all out without here, do you have a website you would recommend?

My favorites are sweetaquatics.com, aquariumplants.com, and thatfishplace.com. Sweetaquatics has the best priceing but sometimes takes a while to get your order you can get a plant package there cheap that has several different plants. Also on aguabid there is a seller that I really like his name is mikesweetpets he has a nice assortment of 20+ plants for a 55 gallon tank for $53.00 he has really nice plants and ships them really fast. I know your tank is only 10 gallons but you might could send him a message to see if he has a package for a 10 gallon. Also I would suggest replaceing the incadesent bulbs you have right now with two compact flouresant bulbs the incadesent heat up the water more than it needs to be.
