No real trick. Just tied a thin amount of moss onto a piece of driftwood and placed it in the tank. Then, when I started having algae issues, I soaked it in an Excel solution for about 5 minutes, then placed back into the tank. Didn't even rinse it. Within a couple days, the algae all melted away, and all that was left was a healthy, fast-growing java moss.
As for the fish, yes, those are rainbowfish.
