I am wondering about the eco-complete. It arrived today as did the rest of my order. Only dropped a couple of the packing peanuts out of hundreds. That was a feat in and of itself.

The eco-complete comes with some water in it. That's because it contains the bacteria to get the tank started. It's pre-seeded I suppose. How long can this bacteria live? It needs "food" does it not? I was thinking about setting it up this weekend without plants then ordering them but it would be a full week without plants. Could I cycle without them and just toss the plants in when they arrive? If I wait will the bacteria in the eco-complete survive? Too many questions.

Oh yeah. Pink? Turqoise? NEVAR! I find it both amusing and sad on some pics I see with funky looking gravel that looks like a neon diner sign. I suppose in keeping fish, we want to be pleased by our set up but the fish should also be pleased as it's their home. And most fish like darker surroundings and dimly lit homes with real plants. We do the best by our dogs, cats, horses etc... Why not the fish? Pink (dramatic pause) huh

That is a great question about the eco-complete. If no one knows the answer here, mayb etry calling the manufacturer. How do you like the look/size of the gravel?

If it is pre-seeded (which I honestly do not know so just read the package) then the plants won't matter you can toss them in whenever - But to keep the bacteria going and your tank cycling with no fish you need to get yourself to Walmart buy a lil box of whatever fish flake food you can find there and put a few flakes in EVERY day. You need to feed the tank as if it had fish in it (just less) to keep the bacteria going/ alive (thats also the same why I cycle brand new tanks if I can't seed them)

I can't really seed it unless I ask the LFS for something. And I don't really want their crap in my tank anyhow. My luck I'll end up with some disease in there. I have about 3 sample packages of fish food now. These places I ordered from like to throw free fish food in so that's no problem.

So if I set it up this weekend and fish flake it all week what will happen when I drop the plants in? Growth spurt from instant ammonia intake? That'd be nice.

Lisa. It looks great. The black looks like it's going to be fantastic in the tank. The size is awesome too. It's not too big nor small. This stuff should pose to be a winner.

So if it is seeded as you say, one you'll need to feed it 2) you won't need your LFS stuff (and I's pers never wanna do that EVER)

Get the stuff set up as soon as you can, feed it few flakes a day; then add plants whenever and yes they'll take up some of the stuff (NO's etc) but not all, so you'll still be able to measure the rise & fall (the Peak) with your kit. And while your plants will immediately start growing when you plant them its not gonna be a BOOMMM over night and next AM you have 2ft'er plants in there

Glad to hear you like it! I'm going to get some (60lbs worth) myself once I check out what my LFS has to offer. Can I ask why you ordered 100lbs? I was only thinking 60 lbs for my 55g.

It calls for 1 to 2 pounds per gallon. I leaned toward the 2/gallon to get the substrate deeper. I might need another bag but I'll have to wait till it's all in. I'd like to get 3 inches deep. I will likely make it deeper in the back where the swords are being planted and grade it a little more shallow in the front.
