the balls are called bio balls.it's for the bacteria to propagate and strive in the filter.the sponge is a mechanical filter.i love sponge they can trap the most small and fine particles in the water if you add some add clear to the tank but bryon said it would be better not to add some add clear to a tank that has fish..meaning great for getting rid of cloudiness in a fleshless tank during cycling
