Today was absolutely gorgeous out, so I took a drive down to one of my local lakes to look for some plants. The lake has really expanded and there's even a bunch of little outlying ponds now, which are all fascinating to see.

I ended up finding some schools of mosquito fish in the main body of the lake, so I caught a few just to check general health (I do this every time I go, as there was once a disease that went through one of the lakes). To my absolute shock, in with the net of mosquito fish was this tiny little fat fish I'd never seen before!

It looked a bit like a killifish and I had a hunch it might be, so I dipped my net a few times and caught a few more and brought them home and acclimated them.

I did some research and I'm pretty sure these are Least Killis, they're absolutely GORGEOUS and seriously adorable, and I was SO EXCITED to find them! I've never seen them in the lake before!

I caught a total of ten, although unfortunately I didn't get a good m/f ratio. I've only got 2 females, with 8 males. I'm going to go back tomorrow and try and catch 10 more girls to bring me up to 20 fish total, which according to AqAqdviosr would put me at around 80% stocked. I am a bit worried that it would be too many fish though, but they are really really small! Any input on if that would be too many?

Here's a picture I caught of two males, and I'll be uploading a video of them shortly!

Thank you SO much Chesh! I'm literally still like so excited about them! I keep going in and staring at them, they're so CUTE.

I turned one lamp off, so that they could hide in the dark and not be so stressed, but a few have already ventured into the lit part of the tank to check stuff out. I love them so much already!

Even if it's not too many fish now, you're dealing with livebearers and you know exactly what that means. They look perfect in there, btw!

That's it. I'm calling out of work tomorrow and heading over. If I'm not there by Saturday, please let someone know to come look for me, k?

JEN! I don't have words for how cool this is. And you know its true, cuz I've already been trying for a while before you posted :P There aren't enough exclamation points in the world to express my excitement. . . but I'll try again, just for fun. . .
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I think these punctuation marks may be bigger than the fish! Awww!)

Thanks for getting the video. . . they're beautiful little things! Well. . . 'little' is far too big of a word to be accurate in this case >.< The shrimp in the video help to lend just a bit of perspective .
Jen's MASSIVE shrimp:P

Oh my. . . I <3 these woObie feesh!

Not only are they stunning - but that you caught them yourself. It really just bloggles my mind!!

I don't know much of anything about fish, and even less about these particular babies - but they sure do look chilled out and relaxed! If I had to guess, I'd say they've settled right into their new home - and how could they not? Your tanks are always so lovely. <3

Good luck with the quest tomorrow! Please don't forget to let us know how it goes - I hope you find those elusive females you're looking for. . .

I'm so jealous!!! I want to wander down to a random lake and come home with nanofish! How COOL is that!!!? Good luck!

Ehehe, yeah BWG, I've read these girls will have LOTS of babies!

I know I can relocate some to my mom's pond (altho, there aren't many plants there since it's very shaded. I'll have to try and get more in there if I plan to take them there.), and I'm going to ask my LFS if they'd be interested in taking in the babies for store credit, plus posting a classifieds if I get very crowded. (I'm going to try my best to keep to only having 20, but they're SO DARN HARD TO COUNT!)

Worst comes to worst I could probably feed the fry to the rasboras? ;/ I'd feel bad tho, but it is nature.

THANK YOU CHESH <3

Haha, my shrimp look like godzilla comparatively, and my snails the size of boulders!

Most of them seem to have settled down (lights out now, tho!), although there were a few still hanging out near the bottom in the corner.

I know a lot of people say they're bland in color but I think they're super pretty!

Got some more girlies acclimating! Took FOREVER to catch just a few, I was in the same spot as yesterday. I labored just to catch around 6 females (caught a bunch of boys tho, threw them back), and then I moved to a different spot and caught a whole netful of girlies -___-

Tested the lake water, results are kind of weird??

Ph is around 6.2 - 6.4
Gh is 5
Kh is 1? 1 drop and the water changed to the end color.

Look at all these tadpoles! It was like black swarms in places of the lake, so cute!

I kept snorting and stifling my giggles because they were nibbling on my hands. They're so adorable.

Bullhead catfish?? That must be so cute!!!

Yeah, there were spots I had to walk SO slow to make sure I didn't step on any, it looked like just black swarms.

More pictures of the cuties, I can't resist.

I caught a total of 13 females today, bringing me to 15 girls to 8 boys. So there are now 23 of them in the tank now o.o AqAdvisor has me at 99% stocked, so I'm def gonna have to be careful with keeping population under control! I really hope I haven't crowded them.

The boys seem much more personable than the females, who tend to hang back a bit while the males are out and poking around the tank. They really like picking at the substrate.

I'm a bit worried about feeding, but I know atm I have a LOT of little buggies and such in the ten that I've seen them nibble at. I know I have daphnia to feed them, and will soon have mosquito larvae when the temps warm up.
Maybe they will give me the push to finally dive in and get a black worm culture going ;p
