Heater popped

I just finished with the WC in the tank, refilled, turned everything back on and heard a noise that sounded like air being sucked into a filter. I unplugged all the filters, and could still hear it. Thought it was the PH for the co2, unplugged that and still heard it. Then the glass tube blew off the heater. Thankfully it blew downward, instead of exploding. This is the first time I have ever had a heater do this. The glass tube is just friction fit over a rubber barb type fitting. The noise was the heater boiling the water that got inside the heater. WOW!!

Did you have the heater unplugged from the wall when you did the water change?

It was a bit startling. I was in front of the tank when it happened.

Tracybird----I have all electrical equipment plugged into GFI electrical strips, and shut the strip off during maintenance. Thankfully I was done with the WC, and didn't have my hands in the water when I turned the strip back on.
I ordered 8 new heaters and will be replacing all the old ones.

That's good glad to hear that....

You hear of this happening so often, I wonder, out of good fish keeping, if heaters should be replaced on regular intervals even if they appear to be working correctly.... Problem is, you hear of brand new ones failing as well....

It probably would be a good idea to replace heaters every so often. But as you say, even new ones fail . I'm like most other fish keepers, I don't give much thought to equipment failure until it happens
I researched the Aqueon Pro heaters. Seem to be good reviews on them, so I went with them this time.
I will definitely be inspecting my heaters from now on.

They had decent reviews. Guess time will tell.
My only concern is, they are the same principal as the old Stealth Pro heaters. And they totally exploded on occasion, breaking the tank
