How did you figure it out? The only reliable way is when females are still not ripe with eggs. Females are plumper even without eggs while males are smaller and slimmer.

i also wanted to thank everyone for their help and contribution of info...without ya'll my tank would be a mess...almost every idea/solution that i've used has come directly from this forum. you really are doing a good job informing wanna-be's like myself of the correct way to do things...it makes it easier and less scary to be a new-b knowing that i have a group of knowledgeable people to help me. thanks again!

primarily I noticed that the middle sized danio has a triangular shaped anal fin, and the other two, the tiny and the long-finned big one both have gonopodiums....

Danios are egg layers, not livebearers so what you said are primarily for livebearers.
I'm positive that your danio is a female and already ripe with eggs.
Danios are the easiest cyprinids to breed.

Yes. Whether long-finned or not, it can be male or female.
