That's around the price I always see for them too. I say always like I've seen them a lot when it's actually probably only two or three times. That's why I have a much cheaper Dario species lol

HOLY CRAP! $20 a piece?????

My LFS has females and males. When I was there today there was 3f and 1 male that I saw for sure. They are $4.99 a piece. I was thinking that was a lot but not compared to $20

Edit: if that's the going price and they are hard to find thinking I need to go tomorrow and get them??!!??

If those are females and not subordinate males you should get them so everyone on here can live vicariously through you. You're already doing it with the dwarf puffer.

How do you tell the different between subordinate males and females?

According to Seriously Fish:

"This species is very easy to sex but often only males are traded. Females are smaller, have duller patterning (they do not possess any red or blue colouration on the flanks) and a noticeably shorter, rounder-looking body profile then males. Males also develop extended pelvic fins as they mature."

Looking at the pics there it seems like even subordinate males have the red and blue coloring.

Ok going to show my stupidity here

When it says " on the flank" does that mean the side of the fish???? From the pic there and what I seen at the store they look like females but will have to go back and look closer...

Ok well with that said now I am kinda confused??
Its notes that there will be no blue or red coloring on the flanks but if you look at the pics of what they say are females they have some blue and red coloration on the side.

The only thing that really stands out to me is there are no visable lines and the fins are all clear if you look. They have some blueish tint at the tips though.
