They are so beautiful. I had a pair last for a few weeks, and I think not having an older, well cycled tank was to blame. I then had bought 3, one really didn't look healthy to begin with, sort of bloated up and then died. The other two lived on but always hid. One slowly paled and faded away. The 3rd lasted a few more months, but always stayed well hidden, except for feedings. Then he also 'bloated up' and disappeared (I assume death, as I never found his body).

Any idea about the "bloating up"? What happened, was the fish would get very bright and the dark spot would increase in size (appearing that the fish was enlarging? is that possible?)

Tank mates were Black Phantom Tetras and later also Neon Tetras.

Any suggestions?
Hi love_my_fish,

I haven't bred them yet but my own blue ram(the one in the avatar) appears to be courting my new female(who is still very young). Premature spawning will happen but no fry will result on that however I'm looking forward to see them breed.
I have not successfully kept rams before because at that time, I don't know how to take care of the tank properly by water changes.

Now that I know the basics of fishkeeping, I'm prepared for any possible breeding.

Heaven knows my praecox rainbows(now deceased) and pencilfish have spawned several times in the community last April-July. Some eggs managed to hatch but the fry were eventually eaten by several tetras.
By the way, the praecox and pencils were often dubbed to be very difficult to breed but mine spawned in the community which was unexpected. Oh well..

I'm looking forward to breeding angelfish and blue rams soon.

As for bloating, your ram may have suffered dropsy(which is often rare in SA cichlids). It has something to do with the water quality.
I'd recommend you buy blue rams once the tank reaches 4-6 months of maturity.
I admit the blue ram(the one in my avatar) was added when tank was only 3 months. He was an inch size at that time I bought him. Now, he's nearly 3 inches in size. Far too large for any other blue rams I've seen or owned.
P.S. I hate answering questions from any fishkeepers in my area on how my blue ram managed to reach that size because the same questions are just too boring. The answer there is quite simple. Feed the juvenile fish 3-4 times a day and do frequent water changes to maintain cleanliness in your tank.

Good luck with your blue rams.

Female blue rams have pink bellies. My lfs has more females than males. It may depend on your lfs' availability of their stocks.

My aro? He eats only bloodworms and live fish but what can I do? What a fussy fish. He doesn't like shrimps.

Hi Shane,
Bolivian Rams grow to 8 cm max.
Mine is just the right size. Some may reach 4 inches but that is very rare.
They are mouthbrooders though unlike the blue rams which are egg depositors.
You'll find bolivians easier to keep as they are hardier than the delicate blue rams.:D

Good luck.

Pics will be posted on Oct. 10.

Updates:
A pair of gold angelfish spawned yesterday(Oct.1) with over 300 eggs. They ate the eggs an hour later. It doesn't matter to me as I can't accommodate all the fry.
Male blue ram, which I bought last Saturday, is doing well. He was quite underfed. But he's fine now.

It is but you know I want to ditch the pencils soon. As the angels keep chomping down some of them.
I'll be getting a new tank probably by December and move those pencils.
I'm left with only 18 pencils after the angels scoffed some of them.

Currently, I have 18 pencils, 4 glass bloodfin, 8 angels, 8 discus, 6 blue rams, 1 bristlenose, 3 bolivians and 10 kuhli loach.
I don't think one of the discus will last long. It was ill when I brought it home and hasn't been doing well. Actually, I got it for free as I pity his condition. Blame my being soft in the head for treating well a sick fish.
