I've heard to never buy fish on a whim. Obviously I didn't listen and I'm glad I didn't. These blood parrots have so much personality and are intelligent! They are a hardy and healthy fish... I knew nothing about them and when researched them online found that so many people say they are an abomination. I'm sorry people feel that way, and I might have too if I had researched them BEFORE I purchased them... In this pic. my cat Annie is relaxing on the aquarium while the parrots think her wagging tail is food. It is hilarious to watch. They will get a more appropriate home in a few months that will have caves, rocks and sand. I am so excited for them. I never thought I'd say I was crazy for fish but these, I definitely am! :D I will post pics when I have their new, much larger home set up.

haha! Every time one of my cats jumps up on top of the aquarium for a little lounge time the fish all school on up to the top to see if lunch is coming. :)

Glad to see it's not just my pets who seem to have it backwards...

Has your cat ever tried to jump up there when you've got the lid up? Mine made that mistake once. Now I'm very careful not to turn my back when I've got the lid open. Forget the fish jumping out, I've got to keep the other pets from jumping IN!

Great pic, good luck with the bigger better home for your fish!

Ashcat, it is so funny you asked about her jumping in when the lid is up. I have to watch for her everytime I do a water change or feed them. This cat LOVES water! I also worry about the lid caving in because she's a big girl.

i love the way blood parrot chiclids look. i've been wanting a couple, but i don't have a tank for them XD i watch them in petco for like ten straight minutes and i just love them.
why dont people like them? if they're hardy and healthy, you'd think that'd make them pretty like-able.
nice set up by the way =)

Some people in the fish industry call them an abomination because they are not a natural cichlid. It is a man-made fish. It does not and could not occur naturally. They can't close their mouths, have malformed swim bladder.
This information is what I have found after purchasing my fish. I still love my Blood Parrot Cichlids and wouldn't trade them for anything. My aquarium is near the computer desk and I can see them watching me. They will actually watch where you go and show interest. They also love watching the cats play. They love to eat and have never had a problem doing so.

that's interesting that they dont like them cos they're man-made, when pretty much all show bettas are man-made.
aw well, they're pretty and smart =)
Thats a little bit different though.

We are talking about creating a hybrid of two different fish. And half the time the fish that come out are not healthy nor hardy. They often starve to death because their mouth is deformed and they can't get food in there. I personally see no use for them, seems cruel.

Funny thing, I was looking at pictures of the blood parrots the other day on google, and found this http://www.fishingkaki.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=67 If you don't like fish on hooks and some blood then don't look at this. But this guy goes fishing... and hooks a blood parrot? :? I hope he didn't release it. I just thought it was REALLY weird. Possibly someones pet? Oh and ps, the blood parrot is all the way on the bottom of the page.

That's a good sized one too. Very strange!

My cat loves to jump on top of my 55 gallon and drink the water coming out of the HOB filter. Could care less about the fish, just wants some freshly filtered water hehe.

Little-Fizz ( can't figure out how to do the quotes yet so this will have to do.
I was absolutely SHOCKED  when I saw the pic of the Blood Parrot caught from that lake. Someone obviously released him. I wish they had posted more about it. Like it's weight, whether or not it was thrown back... It had beautiful color. And I seriously hope mine don't grow that large!
I understand why you think it's cruel about the Blood Parrots. I would have likely felt the same way if I had known before I purchased them. On the other hand, I have never had fish that I am so happy with. Now off to figure out how to do this quoting you all are doing... :?

Lol!! Nothing against your fish obviously, like I'm not saying that they wouldn't make a good pet. It just seems wrong that people would want to breed them knowing the negative effects that can happen. Its all about money.

Glad to hear your fish are healthy and well though! Lol I doubt they will get THAT big, that fish is freakin HUGE  Mind you it does have a whole body of water to swim around in lol.

What are you having trouble with? Whenever you see someones post that you want to quote, simply click the quote button on the top right hand side of their post then it opens the post reply with the persons quote. If you don't want to quote everything they say then only erase the text but not the [quote-123456789]

Lol almost :p Theres a [quote-123456789] box before and after the quote, sorry forgot to mention that. The only thing you did wrong was erased the first box before all my text.
