I'd be so nervous if I wasn't testing daily while actively trying to change water parameters, at least at first. . .

Water has a CRAZY side - gotta keep an eye on it. . . who knows what its doing in there!?? (probably being wet) o__O *ish paranoid*

Commence with the "i told you so"s
you guys know I'm awful with the testing. so today i did it, starting off with the usual ammonia, nitrite, nitrate dance. o m g.
amm-1.0
NitrITe-.5
NitrAte- 5

id been wondering about my filter for awhile, a tetra 40I. it didn't seem to have the flow it used to. the fish looked to be breathing a little hard too. I'm so glad i checked, but so mad i waited so long :/ maybe that snail would still be alive.

did a 50%water change, gonna get a sponge filter i think today. i think the reason my tank was cloudy now was from a mini cycle. i feel bad. ugh. that'll teach me to be lazy with my babies u.u

:(

Maybe I missed something, I know you've been altering the hardness, but what did you do that would have caused a mini-cycle?

D: I'm sooo sorry this happened to you!!! Your filter could well be the problem. I hope you can find a good sponge filter and get this all cleared up. Maybe add some extra ferts so your plants can start to help take up that ammonia.

But Jes brings up a good point. Adding the coral could have made things worse. BB don't function as well when the pH is below 7.0, but on the upside, ammonia is converted to harmless ammonium at a low pH. Bringing the pH above 7.0 will suddenly cause the ammonium to become harmful ammonia. Did you get a pH reading? It will help us know if that was a contributing factor.

I didn't even think to, i just was like "oh god big change now!" but i will check it. If that happens at a higher pH maybe that'd my issue. I'm glad the pH is up but ugh. i guess I'm not as bright as i thought. i was guessing rinsing my filter cartridge (albeit in old tank water) wad my problem. glad i have you guys!

*hugs* We're always here for you!

That could very well be part of the problem, but the clogging of your filter probably didn't help either. It just happens sometimes. Let's just hope you can fix this before anything else bad happens.

*hugs* hugs all around!

I did pick up a sponge filter (the hydro III for up to 40 gallons) and an air pump for 20-40 gallons. I need to order prime (i'm like out. totally. using API tap water conditioner for now, but i bought a dinky bottle and will need prime before long). That would still help with ammonia detoxification right?

As long as the bottle says it detoxs ammonia it should help. Hopefully your floating plants will help with it, too.
