I have either the III or IV on my 29, so two of the Vs should be fine

I still feel like it is too less of media for the bio-load. *shrug* I guess it's something I won't ever understand XD

TYVM for answering those questions. I felt like I was questioning too much :D

The faster the water is turned over the lower the concentration of ammonia in the water entering the filter. It's like vacuuming - the longer you wait the more stuff there is to suck up. There is a maximum capacity (ammonia concentration) of the media in the filter. Increasing the turnover rate means the same volume of media can handle a larger bioload.

Sponges actually have a ton of surface area that the bacteria can live on

Thanks jaysee! Just saw your post.

I'm pretty sure I've got the III in my 29, its rated for 40 gallons. I'm still thinking I'll use 2x the V, which is rated for 125 gallons.

I'm so happy for you, Bek! Can't wait to see where this tank ends up!!!
If my lotus continues to do well, I may have a woObie to share come spring/summer. . .
I love your sketch, lol. Just a bunch of green scribbles - my kind of tank!
Frogbit isn't a BIG floater, lol. And it will block a lot of the light. My fave so far is watersprite, but there are a lot that I have yet to try! ^__^

Any new thoughts on stocking?

Lol maybe I'll skip out entirely on floaters. My pennywort grows like crazy, maybe it'll fool possible gourami into thinking they float. Same with if I get a lotus!!

As for stocking, I 100% want a female bristlenose pleco, and kuhli loaches. I'd also like diamond tetra- I had seen them in so many videos on youtube and couldn't figure out what they were and NOW I know!! I'd also like color, and Josh suggested dwarf neon rainbows. So maybe those or cardinal tetra, depends on what I find. And then I think I want pearl gourami. All those plus the fish I already have should make for a pretty nice group.

With the bigger tank, this changes everything doesn't it?!! Welcome to the big tank club! Keep at least one of your smaller tanks aside and set up for quarantine purposes right?!!

Quarantining might prove difficult what with parents wanting me to have one tank at all! I'll figure it out though!
