Y'all might have noticed that I'm insane and entirely too emotional. . . well, I have this husband who's the opposite. So when I can't figure myself out, I ask him.
He has decided that I'm going to keep the little Java.

He said. . .
Quote:
I'd keep him. I've known a lot of people with tanks, you're the only one I know who does it. . . like this. *waves hand at 55g tank* anyone else around here that does s***t right for their fish probably already figured out not to buy them from that store anyway.
Catching that thing, bagging it, and bringing it back to the shop is going to stress BOTH of you out. And what are the chances that he'll ever get to anywhere as nice as the tiny tank you have him in now - much less the big tank where he's going? Even if he's the only brown kid in an all-orange school, it isn't like he's the only LOACH in there, and everything else is perfect. He'll be fine. And if he isn't, you'll notice and figure it out then, but he looks happy enough with the other ones to me. He might be 80% happy instead of 100%, but he'd probably be worse off in that shop full of idiots. Anyway, you're already attached to him. And I don't feel like seeing you get all sad you about it. . . .plus the girls will like him because they can pick him out of the group.
makes sense to ME!

He makes a lot of valid points! Especially about the stress involved for you and the fish from the catching process. Also, I''m sure the little guy is better off with you than back at that store. And I know what he means about the girls being able to pick him out of a group. We have so many fish, it's the ones that are different than the rest that stand out with Charlie. He always likes our Hillstream Loach and Bristlesnoses the best, because there is a max of one in each tank, and they stand out. That's why they are all Darth Vader or Darth Maul.

I would definitely go back and get the extra fish. Like Ogre said, think of it as a rescue mission at this point. It's not like you're lining their pockets with more money and rewarding their behavior. And who knows, maybe something will actually have changed for the better because you spoke up.

I heard so long as the other loaches get along with an "Outsider" if you can call it that, everyone will be happy. Most peaceful types of anything get along with others, even if they're a different color. Same with a lot of fish, like the cories and other shoalers. Mollies group up even if they're all different kinds...Yeah, I think that he'll be just fine in your group. Think of it that way. And when loaches get stressed out, it's not unnoticeable. If he doesn't act unhappy, he's probably already been accepted and loves it. =)
I personally think an oddball in the mix with all the mostly identical ones is perfect anyways. Like an albino cory with a bunch of emeralds(I have one of those, but he's got green on his sides because he's supposed to be an emerald as well, but he's a great deal lighter than the rest) so looks aren't important when they all do the same stuff anyways.

By the way, your husband is awesome, and does indeed make good points. But he's also freakin hilarious. xD

Being emotional and insane is fine...could even be considered a good thing. I know a lot of people who go around saying "They're just fish. Who cares if a few die or are unhappy? Just get more later!" =-= I'm also a little emotional and insane. =p It states to all that you care about them and know they're living things. I personally find it awesome.

Ahh, my tank seems a little sad without all the babies in there. =( I got everything seemingly cleared up in my sick tank too...my plants look like crud though. v.v; And my frogs seem to have Chytrid, and I've lost two of them. One thing after another. At least it explains why my first little buddy died of seemingly nothing and couldn't sink.

Darth Vader and Darth Maul. . . *giggle* I really love the Hillstream loaches. My temps are to high to keep them, but they're gorgeous. Are they supposed to be kept in a shoal like other loaches? Funny. . . now that I'm thinking about it, everyone I've ever known to keep them only has one. . .

The 'extra' fish will be had! I'm trying to hurry my cousin up with the 10g, so I can do it before they close today, but. . . it might be sometime this week. 's okay - we're doing the Christmas tree and all the decorating stuff this weekend, so we've been busy too. Still, NOW I'm all impatient!

I hope you're right, but I (and my husband) doubt that they'll really make any changes for the better in that shop. And to answer Sylver's question from earlier, no - it isn't a really well-kept place, either. LOADS of BB algae all over the tanks, which make them LOOK dirty, even if they aren't. They have speceis in tanks together that shouldn't be, and lots of mis-labeled fish. I've asked them if they carry Bolivian rams in the past, and they always say no - well they DO, but they call them Crown Ruby Rams. I also saw tattooed fish in there, which floored me - I've read so much about how awful that is, I never actually expected to see a shop that carries them. So yeah, all in all, I think it's safe to say that these guys don't know anything about fish - or don't care, either way it's not a shop for me. On the other hand, their selection of reptiles, amphibians, and spiders is stunning, and they all look to be very well kept and in good shape. Maybe that's what the owner is into *shrugs*

Chytrid? Sylver, no!!! I'm sorry to hear. The symptom you mention doesn't sound like chytrid to me, but I may be able to help you through this, even if it is - if it isn't too late. Send me a PM, please, with your water parameters, full stocking on the frog tank, and a list of symptoms that you've seen. *looks at notifications* unless you already did... have you seen your frogs shedding at all? We'll pick this up in PM, k?

My husband IS funny, and he doesn't care about the fish - he only cares about ME. Since the fish make me happy, he wants THEM to be happy. It's funny how it works with him, lol!

I know all of the loaches will get along, but your example of Mollies doesn't exactly work here. Even if they look different, they can breed - they're the same species. Though they are very similar in behaviour and appearance, the difference between these loaches is more than skin-deep - they're different fish from the same family. I DO think he'll be fine, but I've spoken to more experienced loach-owners who seem to agree that though they will feed/sleep/hang together, they still seem very aware of which loaches are their type, and will be sure to keep close to their own kind.

Loaches are very polite racists. . . ;)

But yeah. He doesn't seem stressed NOW, and I'll know if he is and get him a buddy or two if it's needed. The Husb also pointed out that I will be getting a 125g at some future point, so plenty of room for more loachlings then :)

Termie? Are you being sarcastic because we've been discussing loaches for the last 38 pages, or is that a genuine question? *giggle* I never know. . . so I'll answer you anyway.

The new loaches I have look similar to the Pangio kuhli and/or Pangio semicincta, but are very small, more lightly colored with pinkish bellies and dark bands that do not extend beyond their lateral line. These are a dwarf species called Pangio cuneovirgata, that will get a MAXIMUM of 2" long.

The non-banded darkly colored guy iis a Pangio oblonga - commonly called a number of names including: Black Kuhli, Chocolate Kuhli, Cinnamon Loach, and Java Loach. Pretty much the same care, requirements, and general appearance as the others mentioned - minus the orange and the stripes. They're actually easy to find, PetSmart carries them

I'm guessing that you're referring to the Hillstream loach that Matt mentioned having - very cool critters. There are a few different types, and I'm not sure which he owns, but the one that I see most commonly in tanks is the Butterfly Hillstream - actual name: Beaufortia kweichowensis. I'd love to own these, but they're a riverine fish and require very good oxygenation, quick water flow, and the cooler temperatures (off the top of my memory their max happy temp is 75f, better in slightly cooler water) as would normally be found in the rivers of China, where they're from (I think). I don't think these are bred in tanks, so they're likely to be wild-caught.They're amazingly beautiful, and I'd love to own a shoal of 'em one day!

The sucky-face loaches are coOl. . .but I think I'm in love with every loach ever invented, to be honest!

Mm, I agree. Loaches are just awesome. My grandma hates them though, she said they freak her out with all the fast swimming and circles and said they look creepy. lol I think they're cute.

I fell inlove with that pointy-faced tire-track eel myself. If I ever got a tank that one of those could live happily in, I'd totally get it...but my grandma would probably NEVER come to see me. ^^; They're so cooool!

Ches, you have the best husband ever! He makes some great points for keeping the little P. oblonga. Lol shame you can't send him down to me. I can't find any Pangio at all in my area... Not even at Petsmart!

PS. All loaches are awesome ^-^

I asked because I haven't been able to keep up on the forums lately....I'm working, studying for work, and etc. so I have rarely gotten time to sit and read :( weekends thought! :D hahaha it's a lot to go through.

Anyways, AWESOME LOACHES! I think I will eventually get some kooool ones. I will have to catch up on this thread so I can actually know whats going on LOL! :D

You are going fish crazy over there and it's funny because I'm about to have a fish explosion over here

Now that is a good husband, reason and logic always wins lol. No but really though, you take some good care of your fish. I know you probably take better care of yours than I do mine. Seriously lucky fish

IMO just get another tank :D MHUHAHAHHAHA and MORE loaches MUAHAHAHA. yes I said it. I know you hate me for it.

If it makes you feel better I'm thinking about getting a 90 Gallon because my friend is moving and he has these lovely fish that...I have watched for a few years....and they wanna give them to the pet store....

On that note, I'm going to stop babbling about loaches for a minute. I haven't done an update on my gorgeous little Beaners for ages and ages, and they've had more than their fair share of drama over the last few months that I completely forgot to post about. Plus my rams are getting jealous over the worms stealing my attention, and I don't know if I ever really updated on how it's going with the new addition to their happy little shoal. Plus, the 20g tank I cleared for my cousin was my grow-out tank full of plants. . . and they NEEDED a new home, so I kind of cheated on my vow to leave my tank alone until the new year and have to take some pics of it's new look. . .
So,yeah - I have a lot of catching up to do. . . but FIRST. . . um, I have too many pictures on my computer again, and it won't let me clear my memory card again. . . so I have to get that cleared up before I can get to the fun stuff. . .again.
*I take entirely too many pictures*
