I've been a member of this forum ever since I set up my aquarium and I've only just noticed that I never shared what had actually happened to my aquarium.
Long story short, I started out with an artificial looking setup, complete with plastic plants.
Three weeks or so into my adventure my tank sprung a leak randomly so I had to dismantle the whole thing and start over again. My LFS was kind enough to provide me with a small replacement tank so that I could keep my fish until my main tank was repaired.
With a lot of help from this community and a few hints and tips from Byron, I decided that I should take the plunge into live plants and get rid of the plastic plants entirely (thank you Byron
). Electricity prices being what they are where I live, I had to contend with a 6,500k 30 watt flourescent over my tank. Over time, I've gotten rid of the plants that plain wouldn't grow in this setup and introduced more low-light plants. Owing to the tannins leached into the water from the driftwood and the temperature of my lighting, my tank now looks like a small blackwater pond.
I think most of you will find the choice of livestock and plants interesting:
4 X Scalare Angelfish
5 X Boesemani Rainbowfish
6 X Zebra Danios
2 X Ramirezi (they seem to be long-finned varieties)
3 X Sterbai Corydoras
1 X Common Pleco
-2 Cryptocoryne species
-2 Java Fern species
-Aponogeton (currently flowering)
-Nymphaea Zenkeri (red water lily)
-Variety of a small Amazon Sword
Any recommendations are welcome and will be seriously considered.
