I left the shrimp world in November last year due to moving and only being allowed 1 tank So I kept my high tech for a while, but the shrimp bug kept pulling on me and I decided to give in lol
I just converted back to low tech and threw together a simple home for the shrimp. Nothing super fancy, but it should grow in and look interesting with lots of Neos crawling around.
Flora
-Pellia or Subwassertang (honestly dont know)
-Anubias nana
-Rotala rutondifolia
-Hygrophila angustofolia
-Hygrophila diformis
-Marsilea minuta
-Ludwigia repens X arcuata
-Brazilian pennywort
-Bacopa caroliana
-Crypt wendtii (green gecko)
-Echinodorus tenellus
Fauna
-Clown Pleco (currently in the process of finding a new home for this guy)
-3x Otocinclus (staying)
-1x Amano (staying, but I want a few more)
-Soon to be Blue Velvet Neocaridina when I can order them
Water Parameters
-75 degrees
-pure SoCal tap water (super hard and pH around 7.9)
Pics (3/29/13) (PS - I turned my drop checker into a gush pod lol)
Also, This was my last thriving PFR/RCS tank from last year. It was Taiwan moss heaven in there lol
No cool scapes or anything, just random plants. It is hard to balance out the settings for both the box and main since they have the same water parameters, the settings are tuned to the main tank's setup. I keep experimenting with light settings on the box so it stops growing algae lol
Also, I am breeding out some of the random reds that came from my blue diamonds. They are PFR grade actually, so thats pretty fun! lol I am keeping them separate and seeing if any of the reds still carry the blue color genes and can produce blues. Or if they lost it completely. Will update later on that.
Lastly, snails! My assassin snails are constantly hungry for protein in the main, so I use the breeder box as a safe haven for pest snails to breed and grow.. then I send them to their deaths lol
DOO ITTT! Just redo one of your small tanks with moss (since its so easy to keep) and some well placed driftwood. Get some cheap red shrimp and have fun
Wow, the breeder box looks awesome!
It would be amazing if the reds could produce blues!!!
Also, I not really sure about shrimp grading, is there a good site somebody could link here showing me??
Thanks! This Neocaridina species is normally brown. But with selective breeding of random gene mutations, different color strains have been stabilized. The red strain selectively bred from the wild type was bred and stabilized, and over time breeders have encountered other random mutations in the reds and created brown, black, and the newest blue strain (that I have). Since they were developed from the red strain, my blues still produce occasional red offspring. This also shows that the blue strain is not yet 100% stabilized to breed "true" and only produce blues, but this is because this strain was just developed and will take time to stabilize
PS - here is a general grading system of red cherry shrimp. The stronger the gene is expressed (requires lots of selective breeding), the higher color quality and cost. Each level of red has its own name as well. Grading system of Cherry to Fire Red Shrimps?
lol, I'm still impressed with your not-scape, and having a bit of trouble seeing all the algae you're complaining about ^.~ Looks good, I'm *almost* as impressed with your little box as I am your tank! Congrats on the reds. . . should be a fun experiment! Pretty things!
Thanks! Im wondering if the red offspring is a complete reversion to the red strain they were developed from, possible random gene crossovers, dominant/recessive issues, etc. Im actually graduating with my degree in Cell/Molecular Bio this semester, so I'm really interested in the genetics going on.

LoL I have been known to buy new tanks (only when I could find them on sale!) and swap them out due to a small chip like that! If my display tanks are not perfect then I am not happy.
A small chip can be more than an aesthetic issue. The corners are the weakest parts of tanks. And my family and friends wonder why I'm so finicky about what or who goes around my tanks. I hope you can get that fixed!!
Put a 5g bucket, sand, sponge filter and simple light under the main tank (no heater, but might put a little better light above). Going to raise up my reds (came from the blues so technically culls) and blue culls in there and let the best blues dominate the main
Been playing with the odd color morphs my blue diamonds produce on occasion and breed them back with a premium blue diamond to see what I can pull out from their genes.
Bred back a glacier blue (came from breeding two random solid reds that came from the blues as well) with solid blue/blacks (true blue diamond stock). Got one of these guys to show up! Looks like a neo blue bolt in the works
Ahhh! WAY COOL! I've been wondering how you and your shrimpies have been doing over there! Thanks for the update - and for bringing us along with you on this fantastic tank journey! *hugs* Can't wait to see what happens next!!!
I've been working on getting stable sapphire blue coloration on my blue diamonds.
