Amazing!! Shame on them for keeping him in a 5 gallon tank!! Of course he could only swim in circles. Thank you for "rescuing" him form pet store hell.
And he is so darn cute too!! Can't wait for the day when he can go into the big tank with the others. When he is a big boy. (Maybe he has been stunted in growth.) Hoping the redness is only from escaping and flipping around a bit... maybe he landed on his tail.

Oh my gosh! So glad you found him. He has the best chance of having a healthy life with you. Would Stumpini be able to live out his life in the 80 gal if he doesn't get along with the other bichir?

It may have been a 10 gallon space...either that or five. I do agree that they shouldn't keep these fish in those kinds of set ups. I understand if they sell fast but these guys generally don't. They require a lot of space and they don't go for cheap at this store.

He is absolutely darling. He swims so well for having just one fin. It's amazing just how much vitality he has.

I hope so too...you know when we finally located him all we saw was his tail. XD

He could live his life in the 80 but...I don't know. He might also eat the rasbora when he is full grown. I really don't think any of the fish in the big tank will really hassle him. However he is better off being quite a bit bigger before sharing space with an Ornate Bichir.

Also I got some recent video where makes a short appearance around the 20 second mark. I dimmed the lights and have been just watching how everyone interacts. Got some cute bits:

Since i cannot edit it into my post:

There was born a fish
Who made people grumpy
Born with one fin
They named him Stumpy

Stumpy oh Stumpy
Why don't people like you?
Stumpy oh Stumpy
With your rose red eyes
They hypnotize

Stumpy was quite jumpy
When given a home
He leaped from a net
He got stuck where he roam

Stumpy oh Stumpy
Why don't people like you?
Stumpy oh Stumpy
With your ivory sheen
My poor heart does sing

Stumpy went home in a bag
Wrapped up nice and warm
Upon going into his new home
He seemed quite tired and worn

Stumpy oh Stumpy
Why don't people like you?
Stumpy oh Stumpy
Your antics so wiley
You make me so smiley

Stumpy hunts shrimps
With the wile of Houdini
Graceful and spirited
His name is now Stumpini

Stumpini oh Stumpini
Why do I like you?
Stumpini oh Stumpini?
With your little odd fin
Hearts you will surely win.

Stumpini has a poem because I got bored. Also part of the stanza wouldn't get out of my head so I decided to write it down.

HAHA! Love the poem, Fox - and the FISH!!! Congratulations on the unexpected arrival, sounds like he had a seriously rough day, I'm relieved to see that he's in such good health today, hope the redness clears up. Your 80g is really looking lovely!

Thanks you two. The redness may in fact just be part of being an albino. There are blood vessels going into that tail fan so...that might be why. I found some video on other albinos and it appears to have the same thing going on.

That said the other bichirs got some attention today:

I took the time to thaw and cut up some tilapia. Ended up making a pretty good video showing off how I cut it and the interactions of the fish during their dinner.

I really wish there was a longer period that allows for editing. Anyway:

Albino Bichir Update - YouTube

You can finally see Stumpini a bit more. Doesn't show off just how well he can swim but it does show him coming out of that corner.

Great video(s)! Your little newbie looks like he's doing well - he's so LITTLE compared to the other two! I remember Queen took quite some time to start coming out of her shell, how long did it take the other two to feel at home?
