This guy has the whole tank to himself. Put 4 various crypts in there with him a little while ago. This was actually the first time I dabbled with live plants.










I know the substrate is gross. I want to swap it out.

haha gross substrate is my daughter's tank! lol. i can't believe how tiny your rts looks! it's like adorably cute!! lol. i LOVE crypts they are my all time fav. plant. they look great!

That's one lucky Red Tailed Shark ! Mine has to put up with all kinds of aggravation from tank mates, but he rules the roost.

Haha he must be the luckiest red tail in the world. I can't wait to see how this tank looks with the substrate swapped.

He's sharing with 3 Amazon Puffers right now, as they needed a larger tank (I bought them as Dwarf Puffers and set up a new 10 gallon for them. ) They all just ignore each other. The RTS had already staked out the area around the driftwood and they're not interested in challenging for it. Adding more plants to it within the next couple of days.

I've actually noticed my RTS used to just hover under the driftwood all day. Now he patrols around the driftwood making sure no one is arming the demilitarized zone. The Puffers are not interested in his space at all. Unlike Pea Puffers, the Amazons are pretty laid back. Except at feeding time.

I also cannot wait to see this tank minus the substrate and background. What's the easiest way to get the substrate out? Just scoop it? Do I have to relocate the fish? I'm thinking of some sort of beige natural looking substrate. None of that fancy eco stuff. And not black, which is my favorite now, because the shark will be completely lost.

I hate that damn substrate. I was just complaining about it in another thread.

i would be worried about recycling the tank if i took out the gravel. though i would take the fish out and just take everything out of it. if i was going to do it in one swipe. maybe you can put some of the old gravel in a filter bag for the extra bio?

Yeah, when I do it I will fill some nylons with the old ugly substrate like I did for the puffer tank. When I bought the nylon socks for that there was 4 in the pack so I still have 3. I'm not wearing two.
