I definitely recommend getting your rock from some sort of quarry or large-scale landscaping place. There's a place near me that sells loose wall rock of all different types for $0.14 a pound. Compared to the more boring blocks and flagstones at Home Depot and other garden centers that sell for much more, I think it's a great deal.
Then again, the only reason I even bought any rock at all is because my family's cabin is about a three hour drive, so I would have spent more money on gas heading out there for some great rocks off our property than I spent at the landscaping place. If you can get suitable rocks from your own property...well hey, you already paid for those!
