I definitely recommend getting your rock from some sort of quarry or large-scale landscaping place. There's a place near me that sells loose wall rock of all different types for $0.14 a pound. Compared to the more boring blocks and flagstones at Home Depot and other garden centers that sell for much more, I think it's a great deal.

Then again, the only reason I even bought any rock at all is because my family's cabin is about a three hour drive, so I would have spent more money on gas heading out there for some great rocks off our property than I spent at the landscaping place. If you can get suitable rocks from your own property...well hey, you already paid for those!

This reminds me of an old Idaho standby... The Goldfish in the cow trough. Here in rural Idaho once in a while you will catch a farmer putting a couple of Goldfish in his 100G water trough. Its funny, they drop them in there and the only thing they have to eat is the algae that grows on the side of the tank (that's why they put them in there). I don't know exactly how humane this is but the fish seem to be health and they live for years (even through the winter)... :P
