The pool filter sand is a heavier sand. It holds down plants well. I like it as when their is algae growth on the top it can be rubbed between your hands in sections and the algae comes clean. I can't vacuum the sand as it will go up the hose. I use a net to get the stuff that settles on the top of the sand every few days. I got this sand from a pool supply store. It's a bit more expensive then play sand or Home Depot sand. But I think it is still cheap at 50 lbs. for $12. Black sand you can get a a local fish store for 20 lbs for about $20. colorful fish look really nice with the black sand so does red cherry shrimp. Just stay away from Tahitian Moon black sand as it is really fine and I have heard people say it is terrible as it is like coal in your tank and and is a mess cleaning it. Black sand does make your tank look darker. Some people put Eco-complete on the bottom of their tanks as this is good for live plants and then put a 2" layer of black sand on top of the Eco-complete. If you want a brighter look and a salt water tank look go for the lighter color sand. Pool filter sand is a tannish color. You can also get crushed coral but that will make your tanks water ph harder.
