Introductory Fish Pictures

Hey all! I just joined recently and figured that pictures would be a good place to start (who doesn't like fish pictures?) so here are a few shots from my tanks. Photography is another hobby of mine, though I'm more of a still life person and am still not very good at taking pictures of fish.

I'd share some full tank shots but 2/3 of them are in a transition process and don't look very pretty, so it'll have to just be fish shots for now. Hopefully I'll be able to share some shots of my community once the plants get established and I can figure out what the heck they are and how they grow. They're just stuck all over for now.

Also, sorry they're not all the same size! They are all from different times.

Lake Kutubu (or Turquoise) rainbow when he was a bit younger and less impressive. I need to get new pictures of them.




Same spot, different fish! Supposedly he's the same as the one above. He's 2x the size and much thicker, so I'm not sure I believe my unreliable LFS's labeling. What do you guys think?

He always looks skinny to me, even though he eats a ton. Fast metabolism, I guess.



Goldfish:



This poor guy's eyes were cloudy when I got him, but they cleared up right away in clean water.

I had two other young fancy Goldfish but they were fishnapped by my grandmother for one of her ponds. I'm sure they'll gleefully grow into behemoths under her care and excessive feeding.


Well, those are some of my fish! I think I'll head off to peruse the threads in this forum.

Those are gorgeous fish pics. I love my rainbows too and have 3 young ones atm. I can't wait to see how they color up. With any luck, they'll look close to yours.

Welcome to the forum! Excellent fish pictures and beautiful fish in general. Will you please come to my house and teach me how to take fish pictures? Mine are always washed out and I can't for the life of me get the fish to look even half as beautiful as they truly are. I want to show people how lovely my Opaline Gourami is because she is quite striking but... I get a dull Grey/blue looking fish when I try. :( Any hints you would be willing to offer would be so much appreciated. Again, Welcome. Can't wait to get to know you and your fish much better. :)

It looks like you need to go beyond just still photography because those shots are awesome! I love all the color in your tanks too.

Thank you! I'm using a Nikon D40x with a low light lens (50mm). I'd never seen a steel blue before until the guy at my LFS talked me into him, but I'm glad he did. He's an interesting little character! The markings on his head remind me of some creature out of Avatar.

Wow, thank you so much! My rainbows are definitely one of my favorite fish, even if they don't have as much "personality" as some of the others. You'll have to share pictures as yours color up! I tried to buy three juvenile Boesemani's and discovered, as they grew and got some color, that they were actually hybrids. I ended up having to pay three times as much for the almost-colored-up ones just to make sure they were the right thing!

Thank you! I think a lot of it has to do with the camera you use. With a DSLR I can pop on a lens that suits the conditions and it makes it a lot easier. I've found that putting more light in the tanks made a HUGE difference as well, since the added light allowed for a faster shutter speed and made it easier to "catch" the fish without as much blur. If your pictures are washed out, are you using a flash? Disabling it helps a lot because it just tends to bounce off of the glass and mess up your pictures.

I just love his pastel colors. I'd never seen a betta like him before and I had to have him even if they did accidentally dump him with another male and cause his tail to get chewed.
