Oh my, what an ordeal! Yeah, sounds like fishing line is NOT the way to go with these guys... sheesh! I'm glad you were able to free her without any harm done to either of you. Good luck with the gourami, it'd be awesome if they were actually able to start a family in there with all those 'monsters'

Haha what a family it would be. Babies hatch, fry swimming around and then big mommy Queen comes up to ahem...baby sit them in her stomach.

Well... Queen is a funny kind of gal, you never really know with her, do you? She might leave them alone. . . how long was Brave in there before she even noticed him?

Brave was a knight. A glorious fish, he got so full of himself one night that he decided to go slay that crazy dragon that lives in a cave.... Didn't go over well. Hopefully these gourami babies won't be so cocky.

You know the more I think about it the more I feel that a lone fish like Brave or the baby Loach do okay because they are the only tiny thing in the tank. The small loner doesn't seem to gather much attention from the Queen. In a group of small ones though that's different. The movement of the smaller fish as a group probably aided Queen in predation at night. The same thing that happened when I moved the last members of my Glo-fish shoal is happening with the baby loaches.

I'm down to one and it's not getting eaten. Fry on the other hand are going to be numerous in number and once they get big enough I imagine they might become food. At that point if I have my 20 gal set up I may move the fry over to there if fry ever happens.

I've been wondering about that, Fox, and I think you're absolutley right. . . Perhaps it's the way they move when they shoal or something that triggers the huntress in her. . . it's a shame it had to be Brave, though. I really got attached to that one super-bright spot in the tank :/ If it wasn't such a risk with a life on the line, I'd want to do an experiment with another baby loach once this one grows out a bit. . . see if you can slip them under her radar one at a time until the shoal is as large as you'd like it. Any word from the LFS on getting the bigger ones in - or, rather, when they'll be able to?

I had thought about that but I don't know. It's expensive to get more loaches that size when I know that they take well to the Golden Zebra Loach. I have not yet heard anything from them but he did say it would be a few weeks before he places his next order. He has to wait till then to contact his supplier.

I now have an update video of my Betta tank:


Recently I swapped the 5 gallon hood that came with the tank for the 10 gallon one that I used to use on my old 75. The 10 gallon one holds two Incandescent bulbs instead of one. So this ups the light not that it's very...well pretty light.

I've had to relocate a few plants from the big tank to the small one including a baby Java Fern that popped off one of the adults. Also something interesting is going on with where my Java Moss was attached:



Seems like not only did a bit of Water Sprite attach itself to the mesh thing, but so did some riccia that is now doing very well. One of the odd things about this whole tank is that I don't run a filter anymore. I do have the sponge back in there to let it colonize bacteria in preparation for the 20 gallon.

When I stopped running a filter it seemed like Blue-Gill was happier. He made bigger bubble nests too. So...something going right in the tank because I have on happy betta.

Wow. That is a massive bubblenest! What is that contraption made of mesh in your betta tank? Is it like a hammock? I love how you've disguised it with Java Moss.
