Therefore, if you're a breeder like me, it's great as a fry tank! The undergravel filter has nothing "filter" about it, it sucks. The cycling process could never complete because you constantly have to change out all of the water, i noticed a very strong fishy smell very quickly, due to ammonia spikes. I also bought a mini heater for this, but tore it down and just put the fry in the main tank (who thank god are big enough now.) The other day I purchased Lee's UG filter, 1 gallon that has a plant attached to it and i think an airstone and it comes with disposable carbon cartridges that are really cheap at the lfs, so once i get this new filter, ill replace that in the 1 gal and have it set up again.
But yes I recommend Lees UG filter (7$ on amazon) and a 1 gallon would be great for fry and/or shrimp. Or snails even!
