Unknown biotope disorder :p

Okay so for Christmas I asked for an aquarium nano tank and my parents are asking those classic suspicious and detailed questions about it, which hopefully means its gonna happen :D, I was curious on the possibilities of biotopes? I have a 55 African cichlid tank, 2 other 10 gallon baby tanks and a 12 gallon planted community so I have quite a bit of experience ... I was wondering if you guys could give me some ideas of what to create...if you could give me stock ideas and designs perhaps ( pictures would be lovely)

How "nano" are we talking here? 1/2 gallon would be very limiting on occupants, but 5 opens more possibilities. Heated or unheated. Lights or no lighting.

Ohh sorry I forgot to mention that! It's 10 gallons and I'm gonna base it one what I'm stocking
