Damage due to cycling is rarely immediately obvious! Liver problems, which are often the result of fish being used throughout cycling due to the initially high nitrates cause the fish to die slowly, just as an example.

I would say if you really want to use fish to cycle the tank get common feeder guppies. By the time the tank is cycled you should have a huge bioload from them breeding and be able to replace them with about the same biomass, in other words if you have 30 guppies you could put in 5-6 swords and be safe if removing the guppies.

That's what I was going to say! :D That's is what I did for my FOWLR tank, and as long as you get the freshwater version, and then wait 24 hours, then it should work.
