Suggestions for fish to stock new aquarium?

Well the title pretty much says it. I have a 29 gallon freshwater with no live plants.

Waiting for cycle to complete, but I want to plan out what fish I am going to get. There are so many!

Maybe those of you with a similiar set up could tell me what fish you have and how it has worked so far?

Also, I have a question about heating the tank. The tank came with a heater which I set to 79F. The pet stores I went to did not all that knowledgeable on this topic, or any others for that matter which is why I am here. How do I know what fish need what temperature? Is there a general rule of thumb for a temperature that most fish can thrive at?

What I normally ask my customers to do is pick the one fish they would really like to keep, and if it is suitable for their tank size we would work every other fish around the (one)..So you really need to think of the one you can't be without.

The temp will depend on what fish you are keeping, but anything between 24-26c is the norm

That is a great idea! Are there any websites you can recommend that have FW fish that are generally found in stores, and their pictures? Or is it better to go to the store first and look? I imagine I could order the fish online even if they didn't have it. Right?

The closest stores are a good 25 minutes away :(

You seem a little knowledgeable, knowing to cycle a tank, prior to getting fish, so I'm assuming you have had fish tanks before.

If you don't mind the travel, then visit the stores and see what fish appeal to you. Make a list of the fish, then do a little research or ask about them here to find out their compatibility.

I prefer getting fish locally, due to the fact that those fish would usually be raised in the same water parameters that I use. Therefore, acclimation would be a little easier. And you don't have to worry about receiving sick/dead fish, due to the stress of shipment, unless the online store has a live shipment guarantee on their fish.

Do a search for any local aquarium clubs for any breeders. Breeders are a better choice, becuase the fish are allot cheaper and have a better pick on the fish.

I have a 5 gal rectangular tank with a cascade power filter which kicks up a fair amount of current. It recently housed two sick Goldfish. I would like to get some new fish and I have a few questions:

I assume I need to do a thorough cleaning of the tank to get rid of whatever killed off the goldies, will it need to be cycled again after I have done this?

I am looking for fairly low maintenance fish for my tank, I was thinking maybe rasboras or barbs? I kind of wanted to get an African Dwarf Frog, can either of these types of fish be kept with one? Do I need a bigger tank for these kinds of fish?

I need to keep cost to a min, but I can probably afford a heater and some other accessories if necessary. I have been reading a lot about keeping fish, but I am still very new at it so I'm looking for something hardy.
